Might anyone be able to direct me to find out what the breakdown is of the water chemistry for Lake Tanganyika?

Thanks!

The book of Pierre Brichard, "fishes of Lake Tanganyika" has a chapter of the water quality of Lake Tanganyika and can be bought here or just look at the link above, it's the same.

Thanks gentlemen. I am also wondering if it is possible to find out the iodine content of the water as well? All the lists I have seen seem to list out the various salts only.

A good search around only got me results of iodine added to Lake Tang buffers by companies. I'm wondering where they got their information from.

Indeed, good observation. Would you happen to know the name of the company that has included iodine into their buffer?

Couple of products....

http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/cata ... 8&catID=39

API Cichlid Natural Trace 237ml

Contains natural derived trace minerals, including copper, zinc, manganese, iron, selenium, molybdenum and iodide and provides the trace minerals found in African rift lakes waters (lake Tanganyika, lake Malawi, lake Victoria), accurately imitating the lakes' chemical profile to ensure the best cichlid environment possible and promote breeding and coloration. Use Natural Trace™ Cichlid weekly to replace trace minerals removed by natural aquarium processes. Add 5 mL per 38 litres weekly.

Seachem Cichlid Lake Salt 700gr

Directions
All doses given for 40 L (10 gallons*). TANGANYIKA: Use 11 g (1.5 teaspoons). MALAWI: Use 5.5 g (3/4 teaspoons). VICTORIA: Use 3.6 g (1/2 teaspoon). pH BUFFERING: Seachem’s Tanganyika Buffer™ (pH 9.0–9.4) and Malawi/Victoria Buffer™ (pH 7.8–8.4) should be used to adjust carbonate hardness and pH. TIPS: Use when setting up an aquarium and when making water changes. To add salt to an established tank, base dose on water being changed. Do not use salt when simply replacing evaporated water. It is best to dissolve the salt in freshwater before use.

Anyone found a good brakedown of the water yet?
This is one but would love one that gives a few more ion concentrations.

All the best James

PS yep your starting point is important I think.
For example my tapwater is almost identical to lake Tanganyika water (once the chlorine has been removed) and many addatives would for me be counter productive I think.
