Cyathopharinx furcifer/foae ID please...

Postby cube3d » Tue Feb 19, 2008 11:04 am

I have a question about my Cyatos. I bougt the juveniles 6 months ago as Cyat. furcier Halembe. Later I checked the net and the book from S. Loose where there was no furcifer at Halembe only foae population. Perheaps because the old nomenclature called the foae as dark furcifer told me the owner of the fishes that this fish is furcifer. I checked the net for pictures but I found many different pics about this kind of foae/furcifer. In Looses book the foae Halembe looks very similar to my fishes. I atach 2 pictures which were made by natural lights. I hope we can decide which Cyatho is this fish?

First I would say your fish are definitely foai. I would give your fish some time to settle past adolescence into adult hood. The appearance of your fish will change into what they are supposed to be if you give them time.

I have an example. I bought these at 1" in September:

This is January

This is last week:

These, of course, are Sibwesa. Expect yours to show a little more green. Mine, if I could photograph them correctly, will show an azure blue head.

If I remember correctly the variant at Halembe belongs to the so-called "Flash" variants, e.g Sibwesa, Karilani, Halembe, Kabogo etc., and I do not think you fish belongs to this group. Your fish has a more uniform bluish color compared with the greenish/cobberish colours these variants has, and most importantly your fish show clearly yellow margins in the dorsal and anal fin - all in all I think you fish are from Kigoma, and not Halembe. Try and compare the two photos of Kigoma and Halembe in Loose's book (p. 114).

Paolo, maybe you can chime in on this one

All the best, Thomas

Hi Cube,
your Cyatho is definetely neither a Halembe foae (more or less the same as the Sibwesa foae) nor a Halembe furcifer (to say the truth I don't know if any furcifer lives at Halembe but those which live closer to the North, at Kabogo, and to the South, at Sibwesa, look alike: see Loose's book).

In my opinion you are keeping the beautiful variant from Burundi (maybe Magara) which I had been keeping for many years a while ago.
The Kigoma variant looks very similar but have a larger yellow area behind the eyes and on the forehead and is normally a bit darker.

I hope this helps you,
Paolo

I think that maybe it is the common Cyathopharynx from "Ruziba". The almost turquoise color is common with them. Also, IME the variant from "Magara" doesn't have yellow on their head at all.

Here's a picture of a friends C. furcifer "Ruziba". And a picture of a "Magara" that I raised a while back.

Hi Dalton,

maybe it is not from Magara, it could be from Nyanza lac or Rutunga ..., but looks almost the same as the one I had years ago (which I was told it was simply a "Burundi" Cyatho).

Here is a very old scanned slide of it:

but the Ruziba (which is usually considered a furcifer) looks quite different to me.

Image.

Anyway is quite difficult to distinguish from pics the difference among Cyathos, as anyone who has kept them knows, they change their colours all the time according light, mood ...

Cheers, Paolo

Hi,

I have to agree with the people that think it is the "Kigoma", the same variety apparently lives in Nyanza Lac. Granted, the orange area behind the eye isn't very pronounced on your fish, but that could be because of the photo. From what I understand it in the variety of C. foae from northern Burundi (Magara etc.) the fins don't have as strong black streaking, but have more even black areas in the blue. The "Ruziba" has streaking in the fins, but the edge of the anal fin is more rounded, also the yellow is not as distinct but goes some way up the fin.

Regards,

Christer
