Anyone have breeding tips for Triglachromis Otostigma

Postby shon982 » Mon Dec 06, 2010 12:45 am

I've got a pair of Triglachromis Otostigma I want to breed
I am unsure which is the male and the female
The one with black on its fin (even the tail fin) and is an overall darker fish is smaller than the other one which has no black markings on any of its fins
pH is 9, KH 15, GH 15. I have two PVC pipes and a flat rock in the 2x18x18 tank.
The size of the tank seems adequate and I believe someone else did a big thread about these fish and bred them in a similar sized tank.
It has a sand substrate which has been moved around SO MUCH by the two. All of it has been pushed to the glass into a huge mound.
The size of the fish is about 10cm+
I am in need of tips, suggestions or any signs I should look for to breed these guys

Thank you
Shon

Didn't you find?
Here it is:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2008&hilit=Triglachromis

That should give you all the information, you need.

The mounding up of the sand is a good sign. Are they sharing a tube? if so, then I think it's just a matter of time and you're doing all you can. One of mine was darger also, but the lighter one had the dark first dorsal ray that the darker one lacked. The darker one also did most of the brood care once the fry were released, and was the one to lead them around to feed. I felt the lighter one with the dark dorsal was female and the thread linked in the previous post seems to confirm.

Mine spawned every few weeks, even when moved to a smaller tank, until I moved them on. I'm currently raising their last brood of about 150 or so.

Oh thank you for that thread! :) that's the one I was talking about
Sucks that all those beautiful pictures have disappeared though :(

"FWIW male Triglachromis have black spines up front in the dorsal, females lack these or they're only hinted at."
That means my female is bigger than the male, could that be a problem?

They aren't sharing a tube yet... I might try something new with their food. At the moment I'm only feeding NLS cichlid formula and spirulina tablets but I'll add brine shrimp to their diet

tangfishguy, I CANT BELIEVE IT! I've watched many of your videos before and have marveled at the Tanganyikan cichlids you keep! I've been amazed by your setup and the fish you keep are beautiful specimens.
So you're really that guy! Small world

FWIW male Triglachromis have black spines up front in the dorsal, females lack these or they're only hinted at

I saw that, but there's conflicting info in the thread. Look at page 4 withthe pics. The female is the one with the first dorsal ray black. That goes wtih what I felt mine were, but could never vent them properly. I'm really bad at that. And not having the pics up any more didn't help.

So you're really that guy

Yeah, I'm that guy. Thanks for the kind words and am glad you enjoy the videos.
