Hurricane Dean

Postby Aquamojo » Wed Aug 22, 2007 6:06 am

First of all I am hoping that all of my friends in Mexico are safe and unscathed.

Second I was wondering what the environmental impact was on the area..speaking specifically about the cichlid habitats.

Mo,

Yes I have been thinking about all of them for several days, as it looks like this storm went right thru the middle of "our" stomping grounds. I hope there is not too much damage.

I am seeing Juan Miguel and the Mexican Cichlid Boys at FOTAS in San Antonio in two weeks, so I'll get a full report then.

Hi Marco,

thanks for the news. I'm planning to collect right in that area in mid-september. Maybe I should change my plans... what do you think? How is the situation further north?

Cheers, m

I am now in the Playa del Carmen area, no damages by Hurricane Dean, the town is in perfect shape and as lively always, I will be diving on Sunday and see how things are underwater. There are just some minor road damages south of the island of Cozumel. Today it is sunny. Chetumal was another history, I was there last Sunday and the day was wonderful, but Tuesday night the hurricane came and for instance the beautiful ball where I give my work lectures was destroyed by the hurricane. The city had no electricity in areas as electric poles went down, floods and destruction were everywhere. I haven't been in Laguna de Bacalar but I remember that when hurricane Gilberto hit back in 1988 (if I remember correctly) it took two years for the water in the lagoon to clear up.

Hi there Michi, from that place "Poza Rica, Veracruz" to the north, seems ok, because the hurricane enter to the country and hit some states like Puebla, but just as a tropical storm, but in the north you will find everything fine, what are you going to collect=?? pantostictus or carpinits??

Just as an update, the Caribbean sea here was affected in the vissibility by hurricane Dean, I was told this will be solved in a couple of weeks. I will see tomorrow how this affected the Cenotes, I don't expect any affectation in though.

Thanks Marco. No cichlids this time... just some Poecilia that are lacking for an analysis;o)

Allright the Caribbean sea in Playa del Carmen and Cozumel must be 5 meters vissibility, but the cenotes are absolutelly wonderful, if with a little less tourists than normal, which make them even better.
