Some beginner questions

Postby Emissary Of Pain » Sun Sep 06, 2009 8:46 am

hey all, i hope u can help me ... i've just got a couple noob questions and i'm new so if i posted this in the wrong section, i'm really sorry.

This is my current set up:

100 L tank,
Resun internal filter ( 200L capable),
natural plants and aquascaped.

1 x Silver Bala Shark
1 x Labidochromis Caeruleus
1 x Convict
1 x Neolamprologus Brichardi
1 x Tiger Oscar
1 x Nimbochromis Venustus
1 x Ahli
1 x Elongatus Ysisa ( my LFS called it that but i cant find info on it )

Now i know i don have da best set up but i'm still startin out. My problem starts with not being able to add new fish at all, my fish constantly attack any new fish ( bought a molomo <sp?> and it never lasted da night ), my oscar refuses to eat and has lost all his red colourin. wat could i do to get him to eat ( i feed my fish super nutrient pellets, tried freeze dried tubifex <sp?> ) and how can i add new fish ? :?: :?:

Your main issue with adding new fish are the fish you have in there right now. You have fish from different countries and lakes and they all have different temperments that usually will not get along well in a cichlid community tank. And they will all be quite different sizes. Maybe you should think about changing your fish list and starting over after doing more research on what kind of area of fish you want to mix. I did the same thing in the beginning and had a horrible end result. Just an idea. Thanks Dustin B.
Fish and Disc Golf, what else do I need?

If I read this post correctly, you are using a 100 litre or approximately a 30 gallon tank? If so, you already have way too many fish which is basically to torture for a large fish like an Oscar as they can grow to more than a foot in length. I suspect it's also a large reason why it's not eating. Between the Bala shark and the Oscar you will eventually loose the rest of the fish as late night snacks. :D

I strongly suggest you rehome all those fish or procure a much larger tank. At the same time you should do some reaserch into the fish you are interested in and try providing the best habitat possible which includes water quality, food and tank space.

thank u 4 your replies ... i do understand i need a bigger tank and i am in the process of trying 2 buy a 6ft 530 L tank ... ... my fish are all pretty close 2 each other in size baring the oscar ... he was a present and i never planned on having 1, strangly my oscar is happy eatin small chunks of freeze tubifex now but not my pellets and altho the fish are all from diff lakes ... they rarely fight amongst eachother only new comers. ... ... My Bala is the only non-cichlid in the tank, why has he not become food yet?

100 L tank,

Is a fine set up. Just go for fish preferably cichilds as we all know the best of fish, that do well in such a tank.
Sorry, none of your selection so far seems suitable to me for a community in such a tank. brichardi could do well as the only breeding fish as will a few of your others but if you want a community then maybe swap the lot and start again. Most of em are not exactly community minded I think.
One of each is kind of nothing I know about, so who knows for sure what could happen :?
