cichlid ID help please

Postby arzerkle » Mon Mar 30, 2009 8:56 pm

A friend of mine and I were at the OCA we he won these guys at the auction. Once they paired of and created havoc he gave them to me, however he has no idea what they are. They look west african to me, but I'm having no luck find out what they are. Big blue eyes and yellow sides similar to my myrna. Any help would be appreciated.

I agree, it is Pelmatochromis buettikoferi. I picked up some myself at OCA from a guy who was selling breeding age youngsters out of his room. I had a pair form out of the five I kept, and I gave 5 to a friend, who has also had a pair form and spawn. I've heard a lot of people talk about how aggressive they are, but mine have only been moderately so when spawning. Sexual characteristics are not extreme, and require close observation to determine.

Here's a shot of my male when I first got him, fins are rough because the salvini in the tank took a slight dislike to him. (Sal went bye-bye for being a wife killer.)

Here's the pair just before they spawned, female left and below.

cichlid ID help please

Can you tell me what you are all doing now to upload photos? I spent way too long trying to do this last night. Have done it before through Photobucket no problem. However, since the upgrade, I see you can now upload directly from computer to the forum. Tried this, it first told me they were too big, so went back and did all the laborious re-sizing there must be a quicker way, then only for the system to say "you can only upload 5 photos per post" Anyone got any tips please?
