Scuds - not cichlids

Does anyone know if scuds (gammarus) eat fish eggs? I've looked all over for this information, and no one seems to have an answer.

Lisa,

You might have to sacrifice some fish eggs to find out, then let us know :)

Wikipedia has this to say about Amphipods.

"Most amphipods are detritivores or scavengers,[4] with some being grazers of algae, omnivores or predators[5] on small insects and crustaceans.[4] Food is grasped with the front two pairs of legs which are armed with large claws."

I recall some years ago that someone among the killifish hobbyists was trying to use amphipods to keep the killifish eggs clean to prevent fungus, and because infertile eggs got soft, they were able to eat those. However, I don't remember it as the standard scuds that were being used. Haven't heard anything about it in quite a while, so I'm not sure if it didn't work, or if the "cleaners" were just too hard to get hold of.

Hmm, very interesting.

I always just thought of them as a potential food source for my fish.
