Cichlid ID, please

Post by frankmgreco » Sun Mar 05, 2017 5:41 pm

Hi folks. Got this fish in a shipment of Thorichthys aureus from Taiwan. Any idea of what species it might be, if indeed it is a "real" species?
Thanks.

It seems like an istlanus.

From the pics I've seen of istlantum, that's not it. They have black along the upper part of the body. Mine does not. However, it is a close match. Perhaps mine is young, or a hybrid.

While I can´t say it is a pure istlanum, there is not another species which resembles istlanum in Central America.

Most of central American species are rather variable. I don´t think I´ve seen all varieties of istlanum

The black is melanistic pattern, you see it only in juveniles, spawning fish o stressed fish. This was one of my two years amacuzac female.
