Personally,I would ask whom ever "owns" a site if I could use anything from their sight. Unless of course it's from a portion of a site where they invite you to use items.... Dan

Try it you might like it.
There is no copy right on anything posted on any website. The second it is posted it is given away (which is a good thing I think)
If you want to keep copy right, stay off the web.
Though if the owner (Ad Konings I think) has any objections, I will take my own photo, mine are looking pretty fine now. :D

PS he owes me a drink.

As I happen do make my living in intellectual property law, I know the above is wrong. Pure and plainly wrong.

Many IT people think the internet is something outside of the real world, but it is not. If I pulish a photo here, I gave permission to keep it here, but not to use it elsewhere. Naturally, before I can sue anyone, i will have to know who is the thief, but that does not say someone stealing my picture is not a thief.

Copyrights are defined and protected by the GATT, Global Agreement on Trade and Tariffs, a treaty most countries are member of, and further by on old treaty almost all countries signed. So, althoug I'm not an American, or Australian, the above is also valid there.

However, as Dan mentioned, many copyright owners don't object use by others, or even invite you to do so

As Bas stated you couldn't be more wrong. There is copyright on ALL things posted on a website, like there is on printed media, audia etc. etc. It is certainly not given away because it has been posted on a website.

I just forgot one thing: It may be me who is a bit oldfashioned in this respect, but besides the legal issues, in my world it's simply an expression of politeness to ask the owner if you want to use a photo etc.

It wasn't your use of a small photo for an avatar that made me reply, it was more your general attitude that anything goes on the internet I reacted to. I don't think anyone would threaten with legal issues because of an avatar

All the best, Thomas
