godmanni of godmani?

Post by Willem Heijns » Tue Nov 04, 2014 2:10 pm

As far as I know, specific names after people are spelled adding an "i" to the name of the person or, if the name has been latinized, replacing the ending "us" with an "i".

In this case, species named after Godman should have the specific epiphet godmani or godmannii (Godman being latinized into Godmannius).

So why is the name spelled godmani in Rivulus godmani Regan 1907 and godmanni in Heros godmanni Günther 1862?

Godman has been latinized to 'Godmannus' (because of the short vocal 'a', it is the same as in Roman names such as Lucullus). Therefore, godmanni (with double n and a single i) is correct for Heros godmanni Günther, 1862, Pimelodus godmanni Günther, 1864 and also for Rivulus godmanni Regan, 1907. Regan has spelled the name only this way in the original description, and it is not evident from that paper that it was an erroneous spelling. External information (such as the treatment in other publications) must not be used to determine if a spelling is incorrect, see Art. 32.5.1.
