Postby jzyjack » Sat Jan 21, 2006 10:04 pm

i'm lookin' to build a tank with the footprint of a 20L/29 i want to make it about 40" high. does anyone have any kind of data on how thick the glass would need to be, if it's even possible at all? thanx.....-jack

Ok, I have to ask. WHY would you want the tank so high? I have a tank that's 30" high and it's a bugger to clean....

i know lisa, i thought about that, but with my space requirements, it would really fit in. i'm thinking about loading the bottom half with rock for the mbuna, and trying to introduce some haps, hoping they'll stay up top. also, i'm 6'3" and i have a step-ladder and long arms. (lol). i just think the 37 i have now could be bigger and take up the same surface area. also this would be the only tank i have to take care of.

For a tank that high the glass must be 19mm (3/4 inch) thick minimum, provided that you make sure there is no lateral bending, which you do with the help of tensors on top of the aquarium. Your question brougth me to search for some French engineering formulas for the calculation of glass thickness in aquariums. I think to remember they appeared in the Association France Cichlid bulletin a couple of decades ago. I could not find them, but I know that thickness works for that height. If anybody has those formulas available I would very much like a copy of them.

garf.org

go there for all your DIY aquarium building. they have a page where you can put in the dimensions you want and it will calculate everything you need.

oh and I think I remember reading that if your going to build higher than 18 inches 1/2 inch tempered glass is a must. we're talking huge amounts of water pressure here

garf is an excellent site, but the DIY tank function won't work for dimenions taller than 36"

perfecto makes a 30 gal. that is 24x12x24 and all-glass makes a 38 gal. that is 30x12x22. one of the companies used to make a 45 that was 24x18x24. if length is a problem, can you go a few inches wider? you could check with glasscages.co and see what they can build for you also. they'll be delivering in Philly on the 20th and you save a lot from the shipping when you can pick it up right from their truck like that.

Just one point. It's very rare to actually utilize tal (and narrow/small footrpint)l tanks - this is because of the problem with gas-exchange. Your tank stocking capacity is very rarely related to the volume of the tank, but to the area of the water-surface. Which is the same for a 20L as for this 40" high... So you really couldn't keep more fish in there - unless you keep few fish that need big territories...
