Want advice for new filters for my larger tanks.

I have done sump systems, central systems, built in ones...exc.. most I think, disliked most.
I bought the 300g setup from ACA 09 with two big marineland filters on it. two c530s???
Ive never liked canisters before but, they are nice when you actually follow the instructions and match the capacity to tank size.

What I am asking is what else is out there that is good quality? looking for people who have had experience with them to tell what they think.

These marinelands have done well, best ones Ive ever had by far but they would be hard to use on my larger tanks.
I remember the FX5 were all the rave when they came out and the price matched the hype but soon after no one said a word and they were selling them....
Plus i have no idea what is new out there.

For sure will need to put some on my 720, one 300, and might put one on or completely convert a sumped 310 and 400.

I make my own "dump" filters out of rubbermaid tubs...basically a sump on top of the tank fed by a pump in the tank (water "dumps" back into the tank via gravity). They're super efficient (little loss of pump flow to head) and infinitely configuarable. Oh yeah and cheap Not the most attractive for the living room (unless you use a decorative tub like a planter), but I swear by them.

the new Fluval G6? i think it is... looks awesome, all digital controls, heated,... only problen is that they are $400-500. i have used the old Fluval 300 and 400 for 5 years now and have had good results. I have also heard good things from people who use Eheim canisters, but as to which ones are the best Im not sure.

i just saw them yesterday, cool looking but like you said high$$ and at that price and very ,low volume rating, $500 for 80 gallons..lol.
just one smaller tank 300/80=3.75~4x500-2000!!

looks like the only thing out there is the FX5's but they look way over rated. also just heard might be some clogging issues with them?

THIS review has been kicking around for years, but it's a very good overview of the FX5 and the Eheim 2080.

I rave about the Eheims. I have no complaint about them after 15 years. Many may think I have stock in the company but I don't they simply make a great filter. I like the fact with the classic series the water enters the filter at the bottom preventing any chance of bypass. The FX5 has suprised me a little more than I anticipated. I know there was much hype but I think people were more impressed with the look without even running the thing. But it has performed better than I expected but I will not put it in the class of an Eheim.

I agree with smitty 100% . Eheim filters cost double the initial price of fluvals but in my opinion they are worth every penny . Eheim will last forever and if anything goes wrong you can buy every part individually and replace rather than replacing the filter . About 10 years ago i bought 4 externals 1 eheim and 3 fluvals , fluvals packed up and have been replaced long ago eheim is still going strong get your self a 2080 or 2060
