Squealing heater

Post by Chaory » Mon Feb 13, 2017 1:35 am

I got a old Top Fin heater that squeals when it turns on. I can only hear it if I'm closer to the tank. As of now, I unplugged the heater and took it out of the tank. After inspecting it, I did not see any crack etc. Not sure if this is an issue. I was thinking of getting another heater. Most likely a Aqueon Pro, since I have a JD.

Anyone has this issue? Is it normal for this type or brand heater to make this sound? The heater was only use for a very short time and has not been in use for a few years.

That old TopFin heater may have a bi-metal switch that has gotten old and brittle,
so it may be barely making contact, which may be making that squealing noise.
May also be generating a spark across the gap, so safety may be an issue

Just replace the heater with a new one to be safe :)

I already replaced it with a Eheim jager. I wonder if PetSmart will refund it, since I believe they are lifetime guarantee.

Can't hurt to ask. Worst they'll say is no. You've already got that now. :)
