Heros Severus "Green Severum" Bloat Concern

Postby Rich Kastor » Thu Dec 11, 2008 5:35 pm

Hello. I have a 9" Green Severum which I believe to have bloat. Swelled abdominal area, loss of appetite(if not completely as I have not seen him eat) and not very active. I have him quarantined in a 20 gallon. I did a water change and added 1 tsp. of epsom salt to the water yesterday. Today I did another water change (10 gallons) and again added epsom salt. I did notice a long stringy poo today and what looks to be some other excrement floating around. I did vacuum that up. I was considering using metronidazole starting on Friday and continued daily water changes.
What can I expect if he pulls through ? IE : Long term health
Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks.

Hi.. In my experience I have used 1 teaspoon per gallon of the epsom salts.. used this on discus and various other fish.. sometimes it takes 24-48 hours to see the results.. Don't know if you had a typo and used this much or not.. Seeing a poop is good.. white might indicate other issues..I don't know about that one.. I've also never used metro so can't help there sorry..
It also helps if once your fish is better to give them veggies.. I feed thawed/shelled frozen peas and also sometimes blanched zuccini.. but the peas really seem to control the bloat issue occuring.. Might be worth a try with yours.. It's cheap and works for me. Sue

Well whatever he had will not be known. I had to euthanize him today. After isolation, daily water changes and epsom salts I saw no change for the better. I did also medicate between the salt with JPC. I thought he was coming around but the last few days he turned towards the worst. After viewing the pics from the other thread I believe he possibly had a tumor. It looked a lot different. More of a bulge if you will. No other fish he was with show any signs of being ill. Just sad really, he was a beautiful fish.
