Gold Severum symptoms

Postby Dana » Mon Jul 07, 2008 2:21 pm

I am hoping someone knows what's wrong with my 4 year old Gold Severum. He has several white/reddish pimples, isn't eating and isn't responding to anti-fungus/anti-bacteria medication. I've removed charcoal, made two water changes and two treatments of medicine containing a combination of nitrofurazone, furazolidone, potassium dichromate over the past week. I see no changes whatsoever. Any suggestions??

Hi Dana.
From the pic it looks like the outward signs of a serious head infection (similar to, if not, HITH). The damage is being done deep inside the head cavity, the pimples are the 'infection' coming to the surface, it may be followed soon by 'popeye' and inflamed nasal area. It is very serious, I've only seen a few fish survive. Treatment can be attempted using meds containing metronidozole (Clout / Octozin). I hope I'm wrong, but it's a common problem with SA and CA cichlids....

I think Graham hit the nail on the head. I would keep doing large water changes and treat as he suggested. Oh, and cross your fingers.

Hi Dana. I see this occuring mostly in mature tanks where the filters/substrate holds a large amount of organic waste. The filters are working fine, so no water quality issues, but the levels of bacteria are very high which might be a breeding ground for certain pathogens. Gravel vac and clean sponges on a regular basis so they maintain efficiency should help minimize the risk, but other factors may be at work....

Hi Lidria. The advice in the above posts still hold true for me, make sure your filters are cleaned out (in old tank water) and the substrate vacc'd. Interpet 9 is worth a shot, but if there's no improvement after the course then switch to 'octozin' (in the UK) or 'metronidozole' in the US. The chance of recovery is low but not impossible if caught early and the (unseen) damage is not too great.

Good luck !!
