Mysterious Disease

Postby tmax57 » Sat Mar 29, 2008 11:33 am

I have a mysterious disease going around a couple of my tanks but it is
only affecting Victorians. The malwains in the tank are totally fine.
They stop eating, they look like they are coughing, their buchal cavity
expands almost looks like they are holding, they constantly have their mouth open, they get very slow and placid. Some hang out in the air bubbles, some sit on the bottom. Some of the
fish have made it out of this, most have not, it is almost a 80% die off
once they have it. I lost a crimson tide male and a couple females to
this, the other females have it and look like they are on their way down,
paralabs red fin piebald fought it off except for one. I also lost half of my P. Nyereri "makobe" to this. Any thoughts? At different
times and on different fish i have tried Anti bacterial, anti fungal, and
methalyne blue I've done water change, and now have added salt, which
seems it may have helped, but has not cured. This has been a battle in two of my tanks now for three months. The disease usually lasts for about 2-3 weeks depending on the fish. Like I said, it is only effecting the Victorians. The malawains, and West Africans that live with the Vics are fine.

Others will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I once read malawi and Victoria might not be a good idea - because the malawis are too busy, too agressive for the mildly mannered Victorians

Should that be the case, the resulting stress could have made the Victorians vulnerable to this desease

I've been keeping Malawains and Victorians together for several years now and I have never had this problem. The malawains in the tanks with them are Yellow Labs and Metriaclima phaeos. The Crimson Tides were the dominant fish in the tank. I have also heard that but have never found it to be true. Victorians are just as active as most Malawains from my experience.
