Discussion about dwarf cichlids from anywhere

since the Apisto's are so hot. . .

Postby RayQ » Mon Feb 02, 2009 11:50 pm

I have caught the apisto bug recently, my LFS has gotten in a couple of types recently, A. Ortmanni (Stiendachneri really) and A. Bitaeniata. Mixed in with the Bitaeniata are these. . .

Image

I picked up three of them, randomly, I believe them to all be males, some have quite bright yellow inthe fins and tail and others have fins like this one. Are they Agassizi or a closely related Apisto, or, are they something completely different? They are wild caught and all appeared exactly hte same until recently, when the spade shaped tail emerged on some and the lyretail on the others (Bitaeniata)

Any opinions are greatly appreciated, also, what should I be looking for to pick some females to go with these guys?

Thanks in advance,

Ray

It's a great shot, but unfortunately, I'm not as good with these guys as Mike Wise is...

Mike? Mike? Where are you? :)

I am not an id expert so please take what I say only in conjunction with others but I would say it is a form of agassizii.

So I would label it A. cf agassizii.

These are A. agassizii - like the holotype form from the Rio/Lago Manacapuru. This form is highly polychromatic and occurs in tributaries of the Amazon from just above the Rio Negro (Brazil) to the Rio Tigre (Peru). It is often found together with other apistos - particularly with A. bitaeniata in Peru.
