The Cichlid Chronicles

My oblongums spawned regularly (they like to hang their babies in overhead plants or even gunk on the side of the tank) but I could never get them to raise their babies past a week or so. I found that they are easily bullied by other fish and would shut down spawning with more aggressive fish. Take out any aggressive fish, feed them worms for a couple of weeks and do a large, warm water change...and you'll find eggs again :)

Good luck.

Thank Mat, they are ina 29 by them selves... :) With regular water changes... He's just not interested...

The new ones are in a holding tank now and looking a bit washed out... All six will be put into a 70 breeder tomorrow...

Hey there! Keep us posted. Very excited to hear how things go in the tank tomorrow.
Im still really irritated at the way they arrived, but at least they made it.

The oscar fry went free swimming yesterday and I'll be collecting samples of the fry for Sam Borstiens project. I will take five fry every day and preserve them so he can do his study on the "Cichlid Melanophore Project"

In other news, I'll be starting to make two 180 gallon tanks this afternoon. I'll be using glass from a old 125... Pics to come!

On a personal note: Thank to those that have joined the CRC simply to follow this thread. If you have not joined it's painless and free! Then simply subscribe to the thread.... Done. :)

So I thought I'd update you all on the aftermath of the great OCA winter auction!

Here's what I came home with:
9 Adult silver/marble angels. (these will go into the 1200 in a couple of weeks)
5 Laetacara dorsigera (close to breeding size and will eventually go in the 1200)
6 Sub Adult Chocolate cichlids (already in the 1200, now I've got 7)
6 Adult Red shoulder Severums. (I initially thought that red shoulder and Rot kiel Sev were the same, they are not! These will also go into the 1200 in a couple of weeks)
2- Sub adult turquoise severums (these will go into the 1200 in a couple of weeks)
Male and female calico bushy nose plecos (these will go into the 1200 after I get a spawn)
6 young Tilapia snyderae (Got the bag for $3, tried to give them away, even tried to leave them there! Alas, I get them home and I really like them! )

Also got my wife three Altolamprologus compressiceps (Gold Head). So in about 35 years they'll be big enough to go in with the mpimbwe fronts she has!

This past weekend was busy, the tilapia snyderae I won at this past ocas winter auction spawned already:

And I moved some fish into the 1200 emptying two 125’s…. One of the 125’s will get a breeding pair of F1 amphilophus flaveolus from lake apoyo, the other is getting taken apart to make the two 180’s.
And here’s a short video of them… So far the angels don’t take poo poo from anyone! LOL

Haven't had much time for much of anything lately...

The red shoulder severums spawned... Saw the eggs, eggs were gone, saw some wrigglers on the sponge filter last nite... Now I can't find em anywhere.

Took five of the Tilapia snyderae to a friends house... Less than three days later they spawned

Big tank is going strong though I lost one of the large turquoise severums and a chocolate.

I think I might start dealing with the electric blue jack dempseys this evening. Should be fun...

Oscar fry are getting big... I plan to keep six or so to put in the big tank. Do sort of a multi generation thing...

So, the fish room has been a mess all winter due to working in Pittsburgh four days a week and staying there... Now that that's over I can get beck to the morning hour rutine of water changes... This morning the 240,185, 2-29's and 7-10's got changes in under one hour. I think it's a new personal best...

Remember those tilapia snyderi that spawned for me right out of the bag from the winter auction? Well, I took two males and three females from that group to the homeowner in Pitt... Within 48 hrs of getting there they spawned! LOL Could it be I've found something easier than convicts?

Also came home last nite from PA to find the Amphilophus flaveolus spawning... That was a treat.. Oh, and convicts were spawning too.... Shocker!

I'd love to show you a photo but it seems as if something with photobucket has changed and I can't figure out how to load a pic to photobucket... I HATE CHANGE.

I don't think you waited too long. Hopefully the ones you have will be the strong ones. I pulled fry yesterday. A few more weeks now for me. Hope all is good with you and the family. Full time next week. Boo.

Well, the flaveolus spawn didn't make it. I think because he's in with two females... He spawned with the smaller (i assume) inexperienced female... Who didn't really take care of the eggs... OH well, they're giant convicts, it'll happen again! LOL
