Thysochromis Ansorgi Spawn

Postby dbrummitt » Tue Feb 17, 2009 8:14 pm

Okay i got 5 Thysochroms juvies at the OCA fishy swap meet this past Sept. and got a pair and now on take 2 i have wrigglers under the mother in a cave. The question is should i move the fry from here in a couple days or just leave them for a while and see what happens. The only reason i worry is because the first batch of eggs got ate by them and they moved to a different cave this time and i have wrigglers. So here are the conditions they are in:

20 gallon long, sand and gravel substrate, Male is living in a pot with hole drilled in it which was the first spawning spot, female is in cichlid cave with wrigglers under her on the opposite end of tank. Any help on this would be appreciated as for they are my first West African egg layer to spawn for me. Thanks Dustin B.

It's possible that the first spawn was just that, their first spawn. Like any Cichlid, that spawn is likely to be poorly fertilized. I would leave them, as my own experience is that this species is usually a very good parent. I have this photo of a friend's tank, the male has 1/2" fry all around him.

However, I would make sure there are no other fish in the tank to eat the fry, just to be safe. These fish are not very aggressive toward one another, again, in my experience.
