Discussion about cichlids from Africa other than Rift Lake

another Astatotilapia burtoni question

Postby LewC » Fri Dec 26, 2008 2:18 pm

Does anyone know the collection location of the common hobby A. burtoni? We're trying to establish whether the newly imported A. sp. "Burtoni Burundi" or A. burtoni "Burundi" is something a little different or just fresh blood of the common burtoni. They seem to have a different look, but it's been so long since I bred the burtoni that I'm not sure.

We've already discussed some it here: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=5351

I think it is hardly possible to give an exact collection locality, since the aquarium stocks may originate from different sources, including Burundian waters. Little is known about the geographic variability of A. burtoni, but the distinct yellow and blue forms of this species are known to occur within a single population.

Do you have some pics of your "Burtoni Burundi"?

Here are the pics of the F0 Burundi male that lews fry came from. These are before and after pics of him dancing for the female, he didn't turn blue like the hap burtoni's do his colors just intensified. Thanks Dustin B.

I think this is simply the yellow morph of the common A. burtoni. Nevertheless it is a beautiful fish with a much more brilliant color than can be seen in some of the old aquarium strains. I don't know if the yellow and blue morphs occur syntopically troughout the range or if there are populations which consist completely of one or the other.

Hi

A friend of mine has A. burundi and blue and yellow individuals appear in the same batches of fry.

I concur, Burtoni is more than likely one of those heinous hybrids as are a lot of other aquarium strain fishes. And this is from a person (me) that leans toward the 'lumper' philosophy.
