A pair of large exCichlasoma salvini guarding their fry in a shallow covered area of the Solosuchil River, Coatzacoalcos River drainage [Mexico]. This species, perhaps due to their brilliant colors, is shy and always remain close to covered areas in the river.
exCichlasoma salvini pair guarding fry at the upper Candelaria River [Mexico]. Males and females of this population are equally colored, making it probably the most beautiful geographical variety of this species.
A Herichthys bartoni male protecting its nest seen as a cave in the soft bottom of Media Luna spring, Panuco basin [Mexico]. The male defend the surroundings of the cave dug out as nest while the female remain inside, just with sporadic excursions by the female to look for food.
In this wonderful video, we can see the Herichthys minckleyi community at Poza de la Becerra, Cuatro Cienegas [Mexico]. At this desert thermal spring, three different morphs of this marvelous cichlid inhabit syntopically; detritivore, piscivore and molluscivore. You can see the molluscivorous morph with their dark coloration and strong jaws as they sink in the detritus layer at the bottom of the springs, in search for snails. You can also see the elongated snout of the piscivorous morph (in the video referred as ditritivor), as well as the most generalized detritivorous morph.

The sheer size of the female makes her slow compared to the neighbor breeding female Herichthys sp. 'white labridens', which suddenly attacks the [ss] fry, probably capturing some babies if the lighting fast strike. Dangers are not scarce for the little fry, surrounded by a multitude of Astyanax mexicanus, nevertheless, [ss] are efficient parents, normally managing to raise a good number of babies to independence.

Paratheraps melanurus pair at Cenote Azul, Hondo River system, a few meters west from Lake Bacalar [Mexico]. A pair of Paratheraps melanurus is seen in the video guarding their babies on the vertical walls of this 90 meters deep sinkhole. At one point the pair gets into the open water off the walls protecting the babies, clustered in a cloud.

Theraps coeruleus pair protecting their eggs placed on the roof of a cave in the floor of the current in the Bascam River, Tulija; Usumacinta River drainage. In this clip we can see the female protecting the surroundings of the cave while the male remains inside, then she comes out of the cave and both protect the surroundings. The large eggs are momentarily exposed, and when replaced to their original position the parents quickly return into the cave.

In this video there are several takes of Thorichthys callolepis breeding at Solosuchil River, Coatzacoalcos River drainage [Mexico]. First you can see an overview of the river in May, 2011, then a female [ss] guarding her spawn. After that, a female is seen guarding her small fry. Finally, a pair of [ss] are seen guarding much larger babies, We can see in this take how fast parents swim backwards when protecting the fry. We can also see how fast fry are.
In this rather long but wonderful video, Rusty captures the fascinating breeding behavior of this gem of the Mayan lands, Thorichthys socolofi, as they protect their progeny in the Bascam River, Tulija, Usumacinta River drainage [Mexico]. In the first part a pair protects their wrigglers hidden under a sunken leaf. In the second part a pair is seeing protecting their fry. Their pair speed and coordination are fascinating to watch.
