i have a central american community set up 4 fish jack dempsey,spilurum,multispinosa,centrarchus the spilurum and multispinosa both spawned and protected the eggs for a week they never hatched of course because there where no males why would they do this

Hi Richy,

It is common for females to lay eggs whether a male is present or not. There are several theories as to why, and the most common one is that they need to lay the eggs, or they will become egg bound. It is frustrating especially when you have a female willing to spawn.
