Feeding Requirements

Postby annie1302 » Mon Apr 23, 2012 12:41 pm

Hi again. It has been about a month now since I set up my 55g cichlid tank.
Everyone seems to be enjoying the rocky environment I provided and I am happy about that.
My attention now is turning to feeding requirements.
Upon further research into the different types of cichlids I have acquired, it seems that I have a mixed bunch when it comes to dietary requirements:
Herbivores:
2 x red top hongi
2 x cobalt blues
1 x demasoni

Omnivores:
3 x electric yellows
2 x white labs
1 x auratus

Carnivores;
1 x albino peacock
1 x blue dolphin

and lastly, 1 red-tailed black shark.

How can I make sure that they all get the proper nutrients they require for both good health and good colour?

I am currently feeding them small sized pellets (since all the fish are juveniles - 1 - 1.5") brand name: Omega One, Natural protein pellets

Please help me - I want my new friends to be healthy!

Thank you.

Hi Annie,

It sounds like you have a nice tank going!

In your case, if you feed protien rich foods you are going to have more issues. I suggest you cater to the vegitarians, and feed primarily green foods filled with more plant content, rather then fish meal. For treats once in a while, maybe once a week of your current cichlid protein. Variety is always best, you can feed them many veggies direct from the fridge. Frozen peas are always a favorite of mine, just a couple, and you will see quite the soccer game! Seaweed paper, zuchinni, many types of lettuce are also good. Remember just a little at first until they realize it is food and then you can give them a little more. In the wild, they are constantly grazing on the algae covered rocks, so let some green grow on the back of your tank so you can watch this natural behavior. On don't forget algae wafers too!!!
